In my almost 25 years, something that I’ve always struggled to get my head aroundhas been the mystery that is skincare. As much as I would love to be the girl that religiously completes her morning and night routine before retiring with a glass of water with lemon, I’ve often been the girl that falls asleep with her makeup on (I’m apologising to the skincare gods as we speak!) and only puts on moisturizer when having a self appointed “self care evening”, and lets not even talk about my non existent morning routine! But I think that one of the most difficult things when it comes to skincare is knowing the correct order to apply each product, because it really seems that every other week there’s a new face cream or serum being discovered that we absolutely cannot live without! Almost everyone you ask will have a different opinion on how and when your skincare products should be applied, but I think I may have just found the skincare routine to end all skincare routines!
The first step is usually taking off that full face of makeup. When it comes to cleanser it can often depend on your skin type, as will most skincare products, but I really do have a special place in my heart for cleansing balms! This feels like the only formula that doesn’t drive my skin crazy, and really seems like the makeup is just melting off your face. This usually means that you don’t have to scrub as much as you would with a makeup wipe or micellar water which is so much kinder to the skin. I’ve also found that a balm almost acts as a moisturiser on the skin and can be a lot more hydrating than other cleansers. Going for a little self care evening? We got you girl! Right after this step you can apply your favourite sheet mask.
After that fresh face comes the toner. This takes off that tiny bit of leftover product, oil, or bacteria that can be left on your skin after cleanser and preps it for any skincare steps that follow. Although this isn’t always necessary, it really makes a difference and can take your skincare a step further in the same way a primer does for your makeup, by improving the effectiveness of the rest of your skincare products.
Again, apologies to the skincare gods, but serum is usually the step that I forget until it’s too late! Your serums will usually contain highly concentrated nutrients that target certain areas of your skin, which is why they need to be as close to the skin as possible rather than layered on top of your other skincare products. If you’re looking to start using serums in your skincare routine it’s a great idea to start with something containing loads of hyaluronic acid. I only discovered this holy grail product this year and actually can’t believe that I went so long without it! Hyaluronic acid is a go-to if you’re looking for something to moisturise your skin. Next up is eye cream, something that most of us don’t use until it’s too late! Experts advise that we use eye cream regularly at least every night, starting in your 20’s. This improves the health and thickness of your eyelid skin and stops this area maintains that your eyelid skin maintains its smooth texture later on in life. Don’t believe us? Thandie Newton credits her amazing youthful skin to her favourite Clarins eye cream!
If you’re looking to add a spot treatment into your ever expanding routine, it’s a great idea to do it in the evening as this is actually when the body is working hardest to repair itself. Similar to serums, this product is another one that will need to be as close to the skin as possible, which is why we apply it without too many barriers to get through. It’s important to remember here that these treatments are often super drying so less is always more in the case of spot treatments, as tempted as we may be to apply buckets of it!
Next up is arguably one of the more important steps: MOISTURISER! Even if you find your skin to be oily, I can assure you that there’s a moisturiser out there for you, and your skin will thank you for it! This product basically carries the rest of your skincare routine on its back by infusing your skin with hydration for that J-Lo glow, but also acts as a barrier to trap the rest of your skincare products that you’ve applied before this to ensure that they all work as effectively as possible. As I mentioned earlier, the night time is when your skin is working hardest to repair itself after the day, and moisturiser helps this by providing the skin with everything it needs to do this, from hyaluronic acid to proteins.
If there’s one product you should start using in 2022 it’s a retinol treatment! This does everything from diminishing fine lines and wrinkles to giving us a brighter, smoother complexion. It’s important to remember here that this can be a more intense product so shouldn’t be used in the morning as it can make your skin more vulnerable to sun damage. Retinol is a bit of a hot topic in the beauty world and it seems that nobody can agree on whether to add it before or after moisture, but many suggest pairing it with your favourite moisturiser to make both products more effective!
