"That's Hot!"-Y2K Fashion is Back With A Bang!

Picture this: It’s October 2004, you would put your entire family on the black market in exchange for an iPod, Mean Girls quotes have become part of every conversation with your friends in the past few months, and you don’t even know it right now but next month Natasha Bedingfield will release Unwritten- your go to karaoke song for the rest of your life. Life is good, and dare I say Simple (Apologies in advance for the amount of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears references you’re about to be hit with in the next few minutes!) Is it just us or is everybody as obsessed with everything Y2K as we are right now?

This era was all about making a statement, from hot pink everything, to bedazzled Juicy Couture Tracksuits, to tiny bags. We had assumed these fashion trends were long gone, but it seems that in the past few months the world of scarf tops and baggy jeans has been rediscovered by Gen-Z and we don’t know about you, but we’re loving these modern twists on some of our old favourites fashion pieces!

Skinny Jeans have been in the spotlight for the past decade and we never thought we would see the day we swapped them for a wider leg, yet this year has seen the end of what was once our fashion staple! The wide leg jean was brought to fame in the early 00’s by Britney and Justin and that matching double denim outfit. But we’ve been obsessed with these jeans styles with a cropped tank top or fitted babydoll t-shirt to bring a feminine twist to a more masculine baggy jeans look!

You know how much we love our knitwear when it comes to Autumn so I’m sure you can imagine our delight when we found out that we can wear one of our style staples and still be on trend when it comes to Y2K style, enter ribbed cardigans! This is such a versatile piece and is fab paired with wide legged jeans to create contrast from a more fitted cardigan or worn over a slip dress for a dressier look. If you want to really commit, show some skin in true 00’s fashion and wear the cardigan with the first and last button undone! Just pop your dog into your tiny handbag and you’re ready to go!

Halterneck dresses had a huge moment in the 00’s and we’re getting major Y2K vibes from this powder blue one from Motel Rocks! It also features another trend from this era: the cowl neck. This neckline shows off the collarbones and does a great job of elongating the body while the lightweight ruched fabric skims over the stomach and mid section in a really natural way.

Mini Skirts, or even micro minis were another major trend that was carried from the 90’s into the early 00’s (Thank you J-Lo and your iconic legs, we love you!) However, they’ve had a major style revamp this year! Gone are the days of bright colours and bold prints as we’re seeing mini skirts of today becoming more toned down and simple like this khaki leather one. The A-Line skirt is also super flattering on the legs making it the perfect way to show off those pins!

Did you really think I would write this blog without mentioning the iconic Juicy Couture Tracksuits? This was a real defining statement of the Y2K era and was rocked by everyone from Paris Hilton to Amy Poehler’s character from Mean Girls (There was a reason she was always the “cool mom”) While I’m still not confident enough to fully commit to a hot pink velour bedazzled number, I’ve made it my mission in the past few months to find a comfortable yet on trend loungewear set, and I think I might just have done it with this hoodie and joggers set from New Era!

Some styles from the 00’s were designed to be as revealing as possible…Looking at you here, bandana tops and low rise jeans! And while we’re still not ready for the return of low rise jeans (can we have Britney style abs too please?) we’re making up for it with our excitement for the return of crop tops! While in the 00’s these styles were often a midriff baring graphic t-shirt, this year we’re seeing them become more feminine with fitted, lacy styles like this one from Motel Rocks!
