Big statement incoming: French women (or French people in general) are just the prettiest. Can we all agree on this? It seems that no matter how hard I try, I can never attain French Girl Beauty (it’s a thing!) and I would be lying if I said that I’m not beginning to take it personally. For those who don’t know, French beauty is all about enhancing your natural beauty, as imperfect as that may be. There’s no room for full coverage foundation and our beloved contour here! They view makeup as something to help you feel good rather than a daily necessity, and go about their day with this effortless “I woke up like this” attitude, compared to me with a more “I woke up half an hour early and spent that time in front of a mirror, wondering where it all went wrong” attitude! However, I’m about to burst your bubble here and tell you that French Girl Beauty isn’t always relatable or attainable. It’s time to face the fact that I may never spend my days in a café, looking effortlessly cool and eating all the pastries I want, but what I can do is embrace the au naturel makeup look!
First has to be the glowing skin, this will help the whole sheer, natural foundation step come a bit easier! We’ve found that Hyaluronic acid does this really well, and it’s even better when you’re able to get this on a budget! Hyaluronic acid hydrates your skin throughout multiple layers and leaves it plump, smooth, and devoid of the dreaded fine lines. This has become one of my own desert island items and is a must for no-makeup days!
Next up, a cream blush for the ultimate fresh faced look. This one will give you more of a dewy, glowing look and will have a more natural finish than a powder blush. While a powder blush will give the skin a really glam, polished finish, a cream one will give you a more natural, laid back look. And the best part is that you can use this one for a pretty, subtle lip colour too!
While we always seem to associate red lipstick with French women, a peachy lipstick is ideal for the effortlessly chic look, and is a lot easier to maintain! This 2in1 lipstick and gloss is one of our current favourites. If you really want to commit to the look you can use your finger to smudge this lipstick ever so slightly around the centre of your lips for the lived in, minimum effort look that French girls are famous for!
Another tip that the French beauty community has gifted us has been mascara on the bottom lashes for a super retro look pulled straight from the 60’s. I previously skipped this step often due to fear of “spider-lashes” but trust me when I say that this is another game-changer! This technique really opens the eyes as well as drawing attention to them in a really subtle way. The thinner, more compact wand on this Barry M mascara would be perfect as it would cause less mess than a thicker, more volumising wand!
The final part, but by no means the least important, has to be haircare. French girls are the queens of effortless hair, and although I can’t pull off a cute bun or thick bangs (believe me when I say I’ve tried, but it was a little less Brigitte Bardot and a lot more The Grudge!) but I can totally get behind the whole idea of not spending time fighting with my straighteners when I could be sleeping! But how to they attain this perfect hair? This involves a lengthy process reserved for the weekend (That’s right, they’ve mastered the art of only washing their hair once a week!) and a whole list of hair care products. Just one of these steps is using a hair mask after sleeping in an overnight hair oil. This Argan Oil mask from Beauty Works would be ideal for nourishing your hair to leave it sleek and shiny all week long!
